His work can be found throughout Amsterdam. The Food Halls are the perfect spot if you’re craving for something to eat. Here you will find many stalls selling street food. Taste the snacks, drinks and cosiness that West Amsterdam has to offer. The Food Halls are part of the complex, The Halls. Here you’ll also find a hotel, a library and a cinema.

When the nice weather brakes through, this part of the city is a good place to be. You can visit the dance festival ‘BuitenWesten’ or the Sunday Market at the Westergasfabriek. You will find here some nice regular markets and festivals during the summer.

Museums

If you like art and culture you will be very happy in South Amsterdam. Around the Museum Square you will find the most important museums of the city. Lovers of art and culture are best to go to the Rijksmuseum. This beautiful museum reopened to the public in 2013 and is worth a visit alone just for the building. Here you will find the finest treasures from the Dutch history and the rest of the world. Fans of Vincent van Gogh can indulge in the Van Gogh Museum. Are you more a fan of modern art, than you should visit the Stedelijk Museum. Lovers of classical music will also be satisfied in South Amsterdam. The Concert Hall is situated right next to the Museum Square and has several weekly concerts on the program.

The museums and the Concert Hall are all within walking distance of each other. The Museum Square is reachable by tram 2 and 5 from Amsterdam Central Station.

The Pijp

If you fancy a lunch, dinner or a drink, you are in the right place in the Pijp. This attractive neighbourhood in South Amsterdam is a real student area. Here you will find many bars and restaurants. But also shopping lovers can indulge in one of the many unique boutiques.

Do you fancy a cup of coffee or a light lunch? Then you should try REIN. A fancy and fresh interior and a real healthy hotspot. If you are thirsty, try visiting the Pilsvogel. A bar with an authentic Amsterdam atmosphere.

The neighbourhood The Pijp is easily accessible from Amsterdam Central Station by tram 16 or 24.

The Albert Cuyp market

Wondering how a proper Amsterdam market looks like? Then you really should visit the Albert Cuyp Market. This is the most famous market of Amsterdam and possibly of the Netherlands. You’ll find this authentic market in the middle of the Pijp area. Here you can find fabrics, souvenirs, snacks, meat and fish. The market is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 until 17:00. The market is closed on Sundays.

Nature in South Amsterdam

If you want to leave the busyness of the city behind for a bit, it is quite nice to just relax in one of the parks. You’ll find the Vondelpark, the biggest and most famous park of Amsterdam, within walking distance of the Museum Square. A lovely park to stroll around. You will find many street artists and skaters. You can also enjoy a drink on one of the terraces. In the middle of the park you will find the Vondelpark Theatre. Here are many free concerts organized during the summer months.

The Pijp also offers nature to relax. The Sarphatiepark is located in this charming neighbourhood. The park may not be as large as the Vondelpark, but definitely worth a visit. For example, the park is filled with brightly colored parakeets.

Staying near South Amsterdam

Of course it is possible to find accommodation in South Amsterdam’s hotels or apartments. It is a beautiful area to explore the city, but it is also very busy and because of its status, on the pricey side. Staying in another part of the city might not be such a bad idea. If you prefer more peace and quietness, but still want to be near the centre of Amsterdam, then IJburg is not such a bad idea.
